More Natural Light will shine in Malawi

Handball fans give light to schoolchildren in Malawi

Summary

Last year, fans at the VELUX EHF FINAL4 championship could enter a VELUX competition in front of the handball arena and donate a Natural Light solar lamp to Africa. For every goal scored by the fans a lamp was donated to off-grid regions of Africa. A total of 2,405 lamps were donated through the competition.

The lamps went to a number of projects, such as schools in the Dziwe district of Malawi, where 600 Natural Light lamps were donated, meaning that 2,000 children are now able to read and do their homework after dark.

The lamps are particularly crucial in Malawi as only ten per cent of the population has access to electricity. When darkness falls, the remaining 90 per cent rely on paraffin and kerosene lamps, candles or bonfires for light.

We are very grateful to be one of the schools to receive these solar lamps. Our school has no access to electricity and the same goes for most of our students where they are living. It’s a huge problem in terms of doing their homework and attending classes in the late afternoon,
says Sylvester Muyaya, head teacher at the Dziwe Primary School.

Natural Light is more than just light
Besides providing light, the Natural Light lamps also help to improve air quality by reducing the widespread use of toxic, carbon-emitting kerosene lanterns, and instead harness the sustainable energy of the sun.

We are proud to contribute light for cooking and reading after sunset to areas with no access to electricity as part of our 75th company anniversary and we are glad to support growth in off-grid Africa with affordable solar lamps,
says Michael K. Rasmussen, Marketing Director of the VELUX Group.
