EU Commissioner Visits Green Lighthouse

Summary

Wednesday, Andris Piebalgs, EU Commissioner for Energy, visited the 'Green Lighthouse' in Copenhagen. Mr. Piebalgs was given a guided tour of the building that will be handed over to Copenhagen University as a faculty building in October.

Green Lighthouse is expected to be a local showpiece at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen in December.

Andris Piebalgs arrived directly from the Nordic Climate Solutions conference in Copenhagen's Bella Center where he had discussed ideal partnerships between business and politics in the post-COP 15 world with Connie Hedegaard, the Danish Minister for Climate and Energy.

The EU Commissioner was introduced to the Green Lighthouse that is a concrete result of a strategic alliance between the University of Copenhagen, The Danish University and Property Agency, the Municipality of Copenhagen, VELFAC and the VELUX Group.

Lone Feifer, Strategic Project Manager at the VELUX Group, guided Mr. Piebalgs around the building that will be ready for handing over to Copenhagen University in October. Green Lighthouse will house a faculty lounge for students and researchers, meeting facilities and the student service function. More than 15,000 students will use the building that is constructed with optimal balance between energy efficiency, architectural quality, healthy indoor climate and good daylight conditions.

"Andris Piebalgs was happy to visit Green Lighthouse and he stressed the importance of experiments like this. They demonstrate the value of sustainable building," says Lone Feifer.

After the tour around Green Lighthouse, Andris Piebalgs joined representatives from the partners behind the project for a lunch at the local Copenhagen University cantine.
