Danish World Champions Go for Gold Again

The Danish sailing team behind four earlier world championships have VELUX as their new sponsor and are going for gold again in the World Championship in Norway in July.

With four World Championship titles in their duffle-bags, a new boat on its way from the yard and VELUX as their new sponsor, Team VELUX are ready to defend Denmark's colours in the World Championship in boat class X-99 in Norway in July.

Except for a few replacements, the team have sailed together for five years with a regular team in the last two. They won the World Championship in the X-99 class in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and in 2002 the team again stood at the top of the rostrum when they took the World Championship title for the fourth time in a row. The boat was then sold. Now, VELUX has decided to act as sponsor and thus blow new life into the experienced team's World Championship dreams.

"Now, VELUX is sponsoring us and thus supporting our possibility of doing battle for medals. Besides that, VELUX has many of the same values as we have in the team: fresh air, daylight and thoughtful use of resources. It is not only who we are, but also what we do," says René Villefrance, crewman and tactician on the new Team VELUX.

He explains that the team is not organised in a traditional hierarchy, but is unique in consistently working as a team. The yachtsmen do not want to put one ahead of the others on the team.

Team VELUX expect to get their new X-99 boat from the yard after Easter. Their first objective is to win the Danish Championship in Vallensbæk at the end of May. The team are one of the main favourites and the race will give them a good opportunity of getting into form before the World Championship in Norway in July.

Team VELUX have the self-confidence that's needed:
"Our aim is quite clear," says René Villefrance from Team VELUX. "It is to win the Danish Championship and then the World Championship. We have the experience, and we have optimum conditions through our sponsorship agreement with VELUX. This means that we have the best and most highly tuned gear, and we feel well equipped to bring the cup home to Denmark again."
