In 2021, VELUX Group launched an open innovation process to change the way we build today towards more sustainable practices and to decarbonize buildings. We spend 90% of our time indoors, yet 1 out of 3 Europeans is exposed to at least one indoor climate hazard such as lack of daylight, cold, damp or noise, according to the Healthy Homes Barometer 2022 and Healthy Buildings Barometer 2024. The way we build and live directly impacts our physical and mental health. The design of the house and indoor environment has a strong positive impact on residents' well-being, with over 70% of Living Places guests reporting improved mood, increased relaxation, and a sense of connection to nature while experiencing minimal negative effects.

4. The design of Living Places Copenhagen, which optimizes daylight and natural ventilation, has been well-received by guests
Designed to optimize daylight and natural ventilation, 83% of all guests favoured spending time in rooms with more natural light while 90% also found it easy to adjust the shadings to ensure an optimal indoor environment. The Sustainability Challenge encourages students to create furniture for the music festival in a sustainable and circular way. This year, participants used window frames from VELUX to demonstrate how to reduce the carbon footprint of their furniture designs.

In collaboration with VELUX and IDA, Roskilde Festival challenged students to build elements for a lounge area for festival guests using VELUX window frames. Since the start of the competition in March, 50 groups participated in the challenge. Of these, 11 groups were selected to present their furniture concepts to a jury of experts in innovation, design, and sustainability at Roskilde Festival.

Focus on circularity

The competition is about rethinking building methods. The construction industry is a significant CO2 emitter, therefore we need to change our mindset when building by reusing and selecting more sustainable materials. The Sustainability Challenge at Roskilde Festival aims to test the next generation's creativity and their ability to think in a more circular way.

Unlike previous years, where the focus was on building solutions from various recyclable materials, this year's participants were required to construct their furniture using window frames made out of scrap wood from VELUX window production. The materials were provided to the finalists two days before the finale.

FRAME wins Sustainability Challenge 2024

The project ‘FRAME’ won the competition. The four winners behind it are Maria Lykke, Emilie Funderud, Anders Nielsen, and Caroline Brarup Schäfer, all study Furniture Design at VIA Design & Business in Herning. They used plexiglass and nine VELUX window frames to create an installation at Roskilde Festival. ‘FRAME’ focused on community and interaction by providing spaces to sit, relax, and share festival experiences by writing on the plexiglass panels. The project also emphasised sustainability, since the solution could be easily packed up, and reused after the festival.

Impressed jury members

The projects were built and came to life in just 48 hours after being initially conceived and developed in March, when the competition began. The ideas were refined to the last minute detail and selected to be built and ready for the finale within two days and it was this level of dedication that impressed the jury.

The winning group received DKK 10,000, and their solution will be exhibited near the Orange Stage at Roskilde Festival so guests can use it for the rest of the festival. There are a few handy tricks which can help you beat the blues.

Let the light in
Around 5% of the world’s population is, according to the Lighting Research Center in the US, hit by some sort of depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD)1, characterized by recurrent depressive episodes in the autumn and winter.

While the cause for feeling blue or depressed is not yet fully uncovered, studies in the past 20 years have documented how exposure to bright light significantly affects our wellbeing and can help reduce the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder2. Symptoms of SAD can be increased feeling of depression, reduced interest in various activities, sleepiness and irritability, and increased appetite and consequent weight gain3.

Something as simple as pulling your curtains back and pulling up your blinds can let more light into your home. Also, pay attention to when you shut them again: wait until the sun has fully set or they can deprive you of what little sunshine your home is getting at this time of year. During work hours, ensure to work close by a window, as they provide at least as much light as a light box, also used in some parts of the world as treatment of SAD2.

Transform spaces If you don’t have enough light coming into your home, you might want to consider a more permanent solution. Whether you want to improve an existing room or create new space and maximize the amount of sunlight coming into your home.

When thinking about adding an extension to your home, it’s important to consider the function of this space and how you best can maximize it. By placing a roof window over a kitchen table or work top, you can transform this space, making it enjoyable when preparing meals and ensure you’re exposed to natural light, or for children completing their homework.

For those whose renovation plans are focused on an existing room in the home then designing with light in mind can also have a transformative power. Think about the direction the room faces and position seating in places where the light is most likely to fall. Adding another window is always worth considering if possible. If a roof window isn’t an option, VELUX sun tunnels are also a great alternative.

Sources

[1] Lighting Research Center: https://www.lrc.rpi.edu/programs/daylighting/dr_health.asp

[2] Wehr et al. If your children are getting older and want separate rooms, or if you are planning for a new baby then a loft conversion could be a great solution. A kitchen extension is a good idea if you’re looking to entertain more or make space for busy family routines. But whatever improvements you are planning, light and air should always be considered. By making small changes and adjustments to your renovation plans to prioritize these elements, you can make a big difference to the look and feel of a space and create new uses of your space.

The best renovation ideas for your needs by Athina Bluff, Founder & Senior Designer, and Amy Brandhorst, Senior Designer, of Topology Interiors.

A loft renovation

Extending up is a great way to make use of the space in your property. Loft conversions are becoming increasingly popular for those who need an additional room or two, as they are often comparatively cheaper than moving to a new house. To make the most of the loft’s location at the top of the house, I suggest letting in as much light as possible via the roof and painting the walls and ceilings in light colors to open up the room. Roof windows are also great for adding ventilation to a loft room and provide a means for controlling the temperature.

If you want to entertain more…

An extension

If you’re thinking about adding an extension to your home, it’s important to consider the function of this space and how best you can maximize it. Often people extend to create extra kitchen or dining space, creating a real hub of the home, where the family can congregate to cook, eat and spend time with one another. By placing a roof window over a kitchen table or work top, you can transform this space, making the surroundings more pleasant for cooking or doing homework. Having the ability to let fresh air in from above is also helpful for removing cooking smells. Sliding doors in to a garden are also great for bringing the outside in and are worth considering.

If you want to improve your existing space…

A room overhaul

If your renovation plans are focused on an existing room in your home then designing with light in mind can have a big impact. Think about the direction the room faces and position seating in places where the light is most likely to fall. Consider using lighter colors to brighten up dim areas and place lamps in shadowy corners. Adding another window is always worth considering if logistically possible. The decision to acquire JET-Group, a European leader in industrial roof light systems, is in line with the VELUX Group’s growth strategy and specifically the desire to grow its business in the non-residential market for daylighting solutions. The acquisition of JET-Group is the second by the VELUX Group this year, with Wasco Products Inc., a US skylight manufacturer, announced in April.

The VELUX Group has been the market leader in the residential market for roof windows for more than 75 years. The VELUX Group’s first step into the commercial (non-residential) market was in 2012 when it launched the VELUX Modular Skylight (VMS) system. Today, the strategy is to develop a leading position in this business area through organic growth and acquisitions.

The commercial market consists of two main segments:

An architectural glazing segment, which has a greater focus on design, with architects playing a significant role in selecting glass or acrylic glazing solutions, and

An industrial flat roof segment, which consists almost entirely of acrylic solutions, such as domes or continuous roof lights (CRLs).

The two segments vary significantly in their target customer groups and sales processes. The VELUX VMS business has a strong presence in the architectural glazing segment while JET has a leading market position in the industrial flat roof segment.

“We look forward to becoming part of the VELUX Group and we see a lot of growth potential and possibilities to strengthen our European business to the benefit of our customers and employees,” says Ralf Dahmer, CEO of JET-Group. Mark Wetzels, Partner at Egeria, is also pleased about the transaction: “I am impressed by the VELUX Group and confident this combination will be good for both companies, their employees and their offering to the market.

“With the acquisition of JET-Group we immediately become one of the leading players in the commercial market in Europe and will begin to merge our VMS operations with the JET-Group to build a new commercial division, which can drive further growth in this market. We also see opportunities to improve JET’s wholesale business by selling some products through the VELUX distribution network, which will also bring more business to our dealer partners. VELUX has always focused on providing daylight and fresh air to create better living and working environments, and the acquisition of JET helps us gain scale and extend our business into a whole new market segment,” says David Briggs, CEO of the VELUX Group.

The acquisition must be approved by the competition authorities in Germany and Austria before it can be completed. The companies will not disclose further information about the transaction until final approval is granted.

Pending approval and subject to completion of the acquisition of JET-Group, JET products will continue to be sold under the JET brand and through the existing organisation, while VELUX will continue to sell VMS products until customers are familiar with the change of ownership and a structured transition to the VELUX brand can be made and communicated to the market. Synergies are expected from developing common functions and key accounts across the two organisations, which will form the basis for a new VELUX commercial division.

VELUX has been assisted in the transaction by EY Corporate Finance and Dentons and Egeria has had Houlihan Lokey and Allen & Overy as advisors.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

It is a kind of ‘VELUX experiment’ that’s in the spirit of VELUX founder Villum Kann Rasmussen, who once said (and which is now a company motto): “One experiment is worth more than 1,000 expert views”. The main purpose of this experiment is to firstly prove it can be done and secondly to learn more about actual market needs for upcycled building materials.

Where the windows are installed

In this experiment, a total of 93 windows were manufactured using reclaimed timber. The first windows have already been installed in the attics of a public housing complex in The Netherlands. The installation of all windows and the entire roof renovation is expected to be finalised by April 2019.

How the windows differ from standard VELUX roof windows

The quality and functionality of the reclaimed timber roof windows is the same as standard VELUX roof windows. The only difference is that the timber has a few imperfections like nail and screw holes or marks and penetrations from other building materials, such as hinges. The window’s surface, which is visible when installed, is painted white, just like standard VELUX roof windows of this type. To distinguish the reclaimed timber windows from standard roof windows, the timber which is hidden after installation is clear-lacquered to reveal its authenticity.

Evaluation process
The VELUX Group will now assess this first attempt at working with reclaimed timber materials. Every step involved in production will be scrutinised to establish key learnings and identify ways to optimise processes before any decision is made about the commercial viability of manufacturing this type of window. It is too soon to know if there could be a market for reclaimed timber roof windows and therefore if they could become part of the VELUX product range.

Watch the Video

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

From today, you will be able to see how daylight can reinvigorate and benefit your home on your iPhone or Android smartphone, as the global roof window leader’s app launches in the App Store and Google Play Store.

Built using new advanced gaming technology, this free tool enables you to experience the effect of daylight in a room and get an immersive experience through 3600 and virtual reality simulations.

Daylight is vital to our health and well-being. Yet many create areas in the home without considering the impact daylight can have.

MyDaylight is the first ever app that makes daylight tangible, giving you the ability to experiment with it, and understand how it can transform a living space.

You can design a real room in the home by easily selecting parameters such as floor dimensions, roof height and ceiling pitch and then customise further by adding windows, floor and wall finishes, the room’s location, and much more.

After approximately ten minutes, you will receive a personal digital simulation which can be viewed in 3600 or virtual reality, giving a life-like recreation of the room and the changing effects of daylight inside. It’s as easy as that!

To imagine and design with daylight in mind you simply:

1. Download the MyDaylight app from the App Store or Google Play Store

2. Configure your space by plotting in data, such as floor dimensions and roof pitch

3. Create different daylight designs by playing with the positioning and size of windows

4. Within minutes, you will receive a notification that your personal daylight render is ready (expect around 1 minute for loading of your simulation the first time you see it, as it loads a big data file)

5. With the rendering saved on your phone, you will be able to experience the room in both 360° and VR formats. By using VR goggles it will make you feel as if you were standing in the middle of the room you just created!

You can play with endless scenarios and designs and create as many simulations as you like. Time and imagination are the only limits.

The MyDaylight app is totally free of charge for everyone and available in the Apple App and Google Play Stores from today, Monday 29 January 2018 in Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Austria, Belgium and Slovenia, and on 30 Jan in Germany.

In February, it will be available in Poland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain and Hungary, and more countries are to follow later in the year.

A version for the US will be available later in the year.

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

The VILLUM Window Collection houses 300 historic windows from the 17th century to the present day.

The exhibition was created by VKR Holding together with the design company Rosan Bosch Studio and lighting designer Kim Borch.

The new, permanent collection of windows is brought to life in the exhibition as a journey through history, in which epochs, window types and exhibition techniques are linked together to give a humanist view of the window via its importance to architecture, town planning and human quality of life.

The exhibition is built up around the Time Tunnel, a linear journey through various spaces and ages. It gives the visitor a tangible and sensory experience of the importance of the window as a source to mankind of light, air and view. In many places, artificial light gives an exquisite illusion of daylight and sunlight by drawing fields of light in floor, walls and window frames. Light has been meticulously worked and every finesse in the lighting toolbox has been put to effective use for the lighting to give the desired effect. Great originality went into the creation of the illusion of the Versailles daylit mirror hall and the light captured so well by the renowned Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi. The kaleidoscope of effects created with artificial light appear perfectly natural in the context of the exhibition.

If the fresh fragrance of spring air is to make its way into your home, airing out must become an everyday ritual. All it takes to bring spring indoors and to have a healthier indoor climate is 5-10 minutes effective airing 3 or 4 times a day. This can all be done automatically with programmable VELUX INTEGRA® roof windows.

</pp:summary>

After the wet and variable weather of winter, with precious few chances of a glimpse of the sun, the Danish Meteorological Institute is heralding a mild spring. That makes it more inviting to open your windows to let in air. However, airing out several times a day to refresh your home is recommended all year round.

By now, it is a well-known fact that fresh air benefits our general health. But studies show that we still forget to open our windows on a daily basis. Our indoor climate is regulated by all the activities that go on in our homes. When we light candles, cook supper, dry laundry, turn on a radiator and other routine activities, the need to eliminate unhealthy particles and damp increases.

Automatic airing of the home

With spring just around the corner, it is the perfect time to make some changes to domestic routines and make regular airing a natural, an everyday event. In fact, the recommendation is that it should be short and sweet; windows should be opened three or four times a day, but only for five or ten minutes. If you find it difficult to stick to the routine, VELUX INTEGRA® roof windows can do it for you.

A good indoor climate is created by taking a few simple but effective measures. With the automation system VELUX INTEGRA® it is possible to pre-set your roof window to open automatically and let in fresh air the minute you arrive at home after a full day at work and when you e.g. start cooking to avoid damp and unhealthy particles in the air.

About VELUX INTEGRA®

The VELUX INTEGRA® roof windows, blinds and shutters are activated by a touch control pad, either automatically or on-demand, providing a solution of greater control over our daily life and living comfort.

With its eight pre-defined programs for managing day-to-day situations it is possible to pre-set the roof window to automatically open and close and thereby let in fresh air or roll down shutters and blinds to avoid overheating and thus ensure an optimum indoor climate.

The "Good morning" and "Good night" programs let in fresh air for 15 minutes, then raise or lower the blinds. Furthermore, when you are away from home for an extended period, the "On vacation" mode makes it look as if you were home by opening and closing blinds and shutters, and turning lights on and off. Thus, the automation system VELUX INTEGRA® provides the home with several opportunities that enhance a healthy living as well as make the everyday life easier.

VELUX INTEGRA® has been awarded a number of prizes for its design, innovation and intelligent control system. On 1 February, the VELUX Group opened the order book of the new but classic roof window for historical buildings – an important product that serves to unite past and present in the same construction.

</pp:summary>

It can be difficult to please everyone when historical buildings are to be preserved. There are many solutions to the problem, but few manage to bridge the gulf of history and harmonise the needs of today with the constructions of yesterday.

The VELUX Group opened the order book for the new VELUX classic roof window GVR for use in historical buildings. The objective of the new products is to build a bridge between the building culture of the past and present-day demands for energy and comfort.

Architect Merete Lind Mikkelsen is an expert in modernising historical buildings and contributed her vast knowledge and experience during the development of the new window. She is delighted with the VELUX Group’s new move to preserve the heritage of Danish building traditions.

Classic details bring history alive

At the heart of the development of the new roof window GVR was the objective to create an impression that is firmly rooted in historical architecture.

A historical asset that can be further refined

Although the new roof window GVR was designed to put history at centre stage, it also contains several features that can help property developers and home owners make the most of the full potential of the building. Many projects concerning listed and non-listed buildings involve large roof spaces that can easily be taken into use as living and office space and that can make the project more financially attractive to their developers. And this is where the roof window can be an important component in making a project a bottom-line success.

An important step that must be taken now

Of Denmark’s total building mass of some four million buildings, 9,000 are listed and 335,000 deemed worthy of preservation. Within the next few decades, experts estimate that many of these will require thorough restoration if they are not to fall into complete decay and their cultural and historical value be lost for ever.

The VELUX classic roof window GVR has already made its debut with the restoration of a listed building from 1828 on the island of Falster, south of Copenhagen. The project was financed by private funds and the support of Guldborgsund Municipality and the Danish Agency for Culture.

The classic roof window GVR

Since it was founded in 1941, the VELUX Group has been creating solutions that combine comfort in buildings with user-friendliness and aesthetic appeal. In the development of the new classic roof window GVR, the Group deployed it vast experience to create a product that builds a bridge between building traditions of the past and the future.

The VELUX Group asked it best engineers to develop a roof window that makes it possible to unite modern thinking with historical building tradition. They allied themselves with one of the country’s leading experts in the development of historical buildings, the award-winning architect Merete Lind Mikkelsen. They made her thoughts on building tradition and classical aesthetics their guiding principles. The result is a product that raises the standard of preservation of our shared building heritage and reinforces the VELUX Group’s position as the leading innovator in the business.

The same applies to the way we dress and decorate the modern home. Thanks to the world’s many innovative designers, everyday objects turn into attractive design statements − and the time has now come to revolutionise the blinds category.

</pp:summary>

Working with internationally acclaimed design duo Scholten & Baijings, the VELUX Group combines six stunning and unique textile designs with the Colour Collection by Scholten & Baijings with the introduction of the new category − Roman Blinds for roof windows.

In 2011, world-famous designer Karim Rashid created a collection of colourful blinds for the VELUX Group. The partnership marked a new approach by the Group, adding design factor to the blinds category. In 2015, yet another significant collaboration will see the light of day.

The Colour Collection by Scholten & Baijings is rooted in the launch of the Roman Blinds collection. It is a design that takes blinds to a new, decorative level while playing with light, shapes and colours. As such, it is the perfect creative match for Amsterdam- based designers Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings.

As a design duo, Scholten & Baijings celebrate their fifteen-years anniversary in 2015, working for companies such as Pastoe, Thomas Eyck, HAY and Georg Jensen, and have gained international recognition for their graphic designs combining light effects, distinctive fluorescent colours and richly crafted details. This is a design DNA that is at the core of their VELUX Colour Collection, making each blind a functional piece of art and an exquisite, yet easy way to decorate with the style of tomorrow.

Decorative and dynamic design
In fact, introducing the VELUX Colour Collection by Scholten & Baijings means introducing not only a design collaboration but also an entirely new VELUX blinds category − Roman Blinds. Unlike other blinds for roof windows, Roman Blinds offer rich, soft textiles with the possibility and flexibility of positioning them in any way you please – at the top, bottom or middle of the window. The choice is yours − and the effect is amazing. Roman Blinds not only allow you to dim the light, but also let you tailor the blind to the rest of the interior – whether you have gone for sculptural, minimalistic or graphic.

Inspired by nature and individually cut
When the VELUX Group approached Scholten & Baijings with the idea of designing a colour collection for the new Roman Blinds range, they took instantly to the idea of integrating light into the design. Obviously, we use blinds to dim or block out light, but light is also vital to us and has great aesthetic and metamorphic qualities. Light is never the same throughout the day. So Scholten & Baijings took inspiration from the changing light we meet in the morning, at midday and at night and created six individual patterns for their Colour Collection. Three colour styles with light-blocking fabric and three with light-regulating translucent fabric, each of them taking on the natural colours from the blues of morning to greys and evening red.

Each pattern is gradient in true Scholten & Baijings style, with a signature hint of neon, and all fabrics are individually cut. This means that no two blinds are alike, and that the patterns reveal themselves differently depending on how they are sculpted. As an extra decorative detail to the translucent fabrics, the patterns project onto the wall once hit by the sunlight, turning the design into a piece of nature’s own art.

For those finding it difficult to choose from the Colour Collection, the Roman Blinds’ design offers a brilliant solution. The blinds are born with an easy-to-change fabric system that allows you to switch from one design to another with a single click. This makes the designs in the Colour Collection highly dynamic and ever-changing, just like the light from dawn to dusk.

Innovation-driven market leader
Offering a new and unique designer blind to the market in collaboration with one of today’s most successful design studios is in line with the overall ambition of the VELUX Group.

For further information about the Colour Collection by Scholten & Baijings please see:
At first sight, it looks plain and undistinguishable from the other buildings in the neighbourhood. But once you enter through the front door, you will be surprised to find bright, daylight-flooded rooms. The family took the much-needed renovation of the roof as an opportunity to install a VELUX roof window systems and sun tunnels. This not only ensure a high quality of living condition, with lots of daylight and fresh air, but also help cut energy use. Thanks to intelligent daylight planning, the family can now mostly do without artificial lighting − even on cloudy days.

</pp:summary>

The starting point was a single-family home built in 1969 to typical Danish design: a single-storey house with a low-sloped saddle roof and an attic underneath that is too low to be used as living space. The rooms in the house used to look dark and uncomfortable. "The bathroom had only two tiny windows before the renovation and the kitchen needed artificial lighting even on bright summer days," explains Lone Larsen. "When we went inside to prepare dinner, the change from bright to dark was particularly noticeable." The hallway was dark as well, and the windowless guest bathroom lacked both daylight and ventilation. Even in the living room it was dark most of the time, despite the large west-facing double patio door. As the 40-year-old roof needed renewal, the Larsens took advantage of the opportunity to bring more daylight into their home.

Light wells allow for a view of the sky
In order to bring more light into the single-family home, the ceilings of the kitchen, dining room, both bathrooms and the entrance area have been opened through light wells towards the roof, where VELUX roof windows have been installed. The roof windows not only bring a lot of daylight into the rooms but also create a healthy indoor climate with fresh air. Thanks to the light wells, the rooms now looks more spacious.

In the kitchen, two roof windows were installed above each other in a light well in the middle of the room. Additionally, in the adjacent dining room, two large roof windows were installed over the dining table as well. Together, the new roof windows have transformed the kitchen and dining area into a bright and airy space. "The dining room has completely changed. Even though it wasn't exactly dark before, it is now much nicer after the roof windows have been installed and it looks much more spacious," says Søren Larsen who is excited about the improved quality of living. "Now we can enjoy a view of the sky and a lot of daylight whilst we have breakfast every morning."

The Larsens also benefit from the renovation of the bathrooms. In the main bathroom, two roof windows was installed above each other and now provide masses of daylight and ade-quate ventilation, which is useful after showering for example. A roof window was also in-stalled in the once windowless guest bathroom, which not only makes the room light but also provides fresh air.

To bring daylight into what was a completely dark hallway in the basement, a roof window was installed in the entrance area. This brightens up the staircase area and hallway towards the cellar and has transformed this formerly gloomy part of the house into a friendly area. The only area where no roof windows were installed is the central hallway. Instead, two VELUX sun tunnels provide the hallway with a lot of light, even on cloudy days. The daylight enters through glass panes in the roof and is redirected to the hallway through reflective tunnels. So the residents can do without artificial lighting in the daytime and instead enjoy a natural and pleasant lighting atmosphere. The sun tunnel can illuminate an area of up to nine square metres – roughly the power equivalent of a 60-Watt light bulb. "The hallway is very bright during the day now. I sometimes check whether the light is in fact turned off," says Lone with a grin. After sunset, the light bulb that is installed in the sun tunnel can be turned on – just like a normal lamp. This eliminates the need for an additional ceiling lamp.

Daylight and natural ventilation cause well-being
The installed roof windows and the brightness that comes with them give the house a special character and put the Larsens in a good mood. The roof windows help cut energy use, too, as the family needs to heat less in the winter thanks to the warming rays of the sun coming through. The rooms are flooded with daylight, so that artificial lighting is mostly unnecessary even on cloudy days, and energy used for lighting has been cut by about eight per cent. The roof windows also play an important role in the ventilation of the building. Due to the difference in temperature inside the building and outside and the differing heights of the windows, the so-called stack-effect comes into play: the warm, stale air rises and leaves through the roof windows, while fresh air flows in from below through the vertical windows. This natural ventilation is particularly efficient – it ensures a supply of fresh air and improves the air quality. "When we have a lot of guests over, and after cooking, we notice the biggest difference from how it used to be. The rooms seem much more comfortable and fresh now," says Lone.

A pleasant indoor climate due to natural ventilation and intelligent heat protection
To prevent the house from heating up on hot summer days, all windows have been equipped with exterior heat block awnings. They prevent the rays of the sun from entering through the large window panes and keep the family from sweating in the summertime. Furthermore, the VELUX Integra sensor system automatically controls all the heat protection elements. Based on the intelligent interplay of the sensors and a frequent assessment of outdoor temperature and daylight levels, the system decides whether the indoor climate benefits more from opening or closing the awnings. The system thus ensures a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the summer.

For the Larsen family The remodelling of their home was definitely worth it for the Larsen family. "It is unbelievable how daylight can transform a once dark and uncomfortable house," concludes Søren.
<pp:caseid>39504</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
The first time Anders and Malene Søndergaard stood in front of the yellow-brick building located in a quiet suburb north of Copenhagen, they immediately fell in love with the old building and agreed: this house, surrounded by a big garden with fruit trees, with a living space of 100 square metres on the ground floor and first floor as well as a basement of nearly 60 square metres, should become the new home for the young couple and their two children, aged three and six. However, the Søndergaards were also critical of some aspects of the over 80-year-old house: the bedroom and children's room upstairs had only one window each, so they looked rather small and dark. The bathroom, also located upstairs, had only a single small window as well, so there was poor ventilation. In addition to this, the whole roof needed to be renewed. Anders and Malene Søndergaard bought the house anyway and had it modernised substantially. Today, VELUX roof windows supply the once dark and compact building with lots of daylight and fresh air and have transformed it into a bright and welcoming home.

</pp:summary>

When the family started planning the remodelling of their new home, their architect advised them to see the renewal of the roof as an opportunity to give the old house completely new qualities. His proposal: altogether, twelve roof windows in the bedrooms, the bathroom and the staircase area would transform the dark building into a comfortable and healthy home with lots of daylight and natural climate control. "When we saw the plans for the first time and counted the windows, we were a bit concerned," says Anders Søndergaard. "The twelve new windows on the first floor seemed quite overwhelming and we were also worried that the large glass surfaces would spoil our privacy."

But their initial scepticism has since turned into pure enthusiasm and the family is excited about the many windows and the bright rooms in their home. "I have to admit that I felt quite exposed because of all the windows at first," says Malene. "But we soon realised that you can't look in from the outside. Not even the neighbours can see what we are doing upstairs." Today she is glad that the family followed the architect's recommendation and did not let the large number of windows discourage them. "In the drawings, you cannot see the light – you can't imagine what it will look like. You have to actually experience it. Everything appears so friendly and simply looks nice."

Bright, daylight-flooded rooms create a good atmosphere
Already in the staircase area, a combination of two VELUX roof window elements ensures sufficient brightness on the way upstairs, even on cloudy days. The master bedroom has been transformed into a bright, daylight-flooded room, thanks to a VELUX system solution "quartet" on the south side – four window elements that form a glass surface that reaches almost from floor to ceiling - as well as two roof windows installed above head height on the north side. "For me, roof windows in the bedroom are pure luxury," explains Malene Søndergaard, "and the interplay of light and shadow and the fresh air are a real pleasure with each new day." The children's room is past all recognition as well. Quartet solutions on both sides of the roof, as well as two roof windows installed above head height facing north, ensure a lot of light and fresh air. "When the children grow up, the room will not only be used for sleeping but will become more of a playroom," says Anders. "Thanks to the roof windows, the room is now bright in the daytime and appears spacious and comfortable." In the initially dark and difficult-to-ventilate bathroom, two roof windows were installed as well, which means more light and much better ventilation. "Before we had the roof windows, the air in the bathroom stayed humid for a long time after somebody took a shower," explains Malene. "Now the humid air leaves through the roof windows quickly and easily."

An attractive house – from the inside and outside
When an older building is transformed into a modern home, there is always the danger of architectural values getting lost and of disharmony arising between the house and its surroundings. With the Søndergaard family's house, this was prevented by means of careful construction and placement of the roof windows. The solar thermal collectors installed on the south side of the roof blend in harmoniously with the overall picture, too. They also allow for the family to save up to 2,595 kWh a year on hot water generation. However, the new windows have not only improved the outer appearance of the house. The Søndergaards can experience their surroundings in a completely new way from the inside as well. "I like the view a lot," says Malene. "We have a view over all the roofs and gardens in the neighbourhood." The attractive renewals on the house have not escaped the neighbours' attention either. "After a visit to our house, the family from across the street was so inspired by the brightness and the view that they decided to have roof windows rather than dormer windows installed themselves," says Anders.

Natural ventilation and intelligent heat protection
The many roof windows not only give the Søndergaards a great view of their surroundings, they also help cut their energy consumption. The family can do mostly without artificial lighting even on cloudy days, and they need to heat less thanks to the warming rays of the sun. The roof windows also play an important role in the ventilation of the building. Due to the differing heights of the windows, the so-called stack-effect comes into play: the warm, stale air rises and leaves through the roof windows installed above head height, while fresh air flows in from below. This natural ventilation is particularly efficient – it ensures a supply of fresh air and guarantees a healthy indoor climate throughout the whole year.

To prevent the space under the roof from heating up on hot summer days, all roof windows have been equipped with exterior heatblock awnings and interior sun protection. Furthermore, the VELUX Integra sensor system opens and closes the windows depending on the level of sunlight and outdoor temperature, and thereby automatically ensures comfortable indoor temperatures during the summer. At the same time, the heatblock awnings create a pleasant atmosphere in the house: "Especially during afternoons, when the awnings are closed, the light in the bedroom and children's room is soft," says Malene. "This is very comfortable and I find it particularly appealing."

Featured,Daylight,Natural ventilation,Roof windows,Renovation

Reduce CO2-emissions with a VELUX roof window

<pp:caseid>39561</pp:caseid><pp:summary>
Analysis show that a VELUX roof window saves more CO2 than it costs to produce and dispose of - mainly due to the free solar energy entering through the window. Consequently, installing a VELUX roof window will help meet the increased demand for energy-savings as well as the overall wish to reduce CO2–emissions and stop global warming.

</pp:summary>

As the effects of climate change are felt across the globe, both governments, industry and private homeowners are taking steps to address the challenges and lower CO2-emissions. Tougher energy-requirements and financial incentives for building green are being introduced. All the while increasing energy demands and scarce fossil fuel-resources raise energy prizes and further encourage private home-owners to choose climate friendly home im-provements.

Now, a new Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) show, that a VELUX roof window can help over-come these issues by saving more CO2 in its lifetime than it costs to produce and dispose of.

Reduce CO2 by up to 500 kg.
Installing a VELUX roof window is effectively accommodating both consumers' and legislators' need for energy- and CO2-savings by reducing total CO2 –emissions. In fact, throughout the lifetime of the window, total CO2-emissions are reduced by 4-500 kg.

Free solar energy leads to energy savings
The reduction of CO2 is mainly thanks to the free solar thermal energy gained through the window. It reduces the demand for heating in the winter months. But a roof window can also lower costs for air conditioning during summer. Replacing and old roof window with a new one, can increase room temperature during the winter by up to 2 degrees C and reduce it during the summer by up to 5 degrees C. The energy contribution of a roof window can be further optimised by adding blinds and shutters to avoid overheating in the summer and improve insulation in the winter. On top of that, the free daylight also reduces energy con-sumption by cutting costs for electrical light during the day.

Energy balance and the environment
To fit the need of consumers and to contribute positively to the environment, VELUX product development focusses on creating and optimal balance between the energy gains from free solar energy entering the home and the amount of energy that escapes through the window.

"Bearing in mind that buildings account for 40% of energy consumption, it is important to us that our products contribute to a healthier and more sustainable way of designing buildings. Now, we are proud to have achieved a level of energy balance where the roof window is a positive contributor to the energy efficiency of the building. One VELUX roof window leaves a positive environmental footprint reducing total CO2 emissions by 4-500 kg from cradle to grave. And on top of that there are the additional benefits of a healthier and more comfortable living environment with daylight and fresh air through the roof," says Jacob Schambye.

Jacob Schambye talks more about sustainable products and LCA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKV32VN2ZPY

Life Cycle Assessments

When the environmental impact is calculated, all stages of the windows life are assessed - from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, maintenance, and disposal or recycling. Calculations show that the impact of production and disposal is very minimal compared to the potential energy gains or losses during the lifetime of the window in the building.

Energy balance,Sustainable buildings,Healthy buildings,Roof windows

The VELUX Group and Disney have teamed up to create the Disney & VELUX Dream Collection™ – an assortment of blinds designed especially for roof windows. Featuring some of the most beloved Disney characters, the collection makes it easy to create an enchanting environment for little ones that is at once soothing and exciting.

</pp:summary>

The VELUX Group, the world's largest producer of roof windows and accessories, is collaborating with Disney to create a new series of blinds for children's rooms. Children can now welcome Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Planes or Disney Princess characters into their bedrooms and become part of their favourite Disney universe in a setting that lets imaginations roam. With 12 unique designs created especially for the Disney & VELUX Dream Collection, the new array of high quality blinds offers thrilling possibilities for room design.

A place for fantasy and rest
Used for both sleep and play, children's rooms typically serve a dual purpose, making it necessary to create an adaptable environment that can both stimulate and relax. This consideration was very important in creating the new collection and guided the decisions throughout the development. Kent Holm, Global Director of Decoration and Sun Screening Products at VELUX Group, explains:

"It is important to both Disney and us that the environment we create for future generations is both safe and creative. Combining the VELUX roof window and blind's expertise with Disney's magical universe enables us to shape spaces that offer room for both play and sleep – two of the most important activities for our children."

Creating an environment for children that is at once tranquil and stimulating can be a challenge. There is, after all, a big difference between rest and play. Together VELUX Group and Disney can strike the ideal balance. The blinds in the Disney & VELUX Dream Collection are all 100% blackout, giving parents and caretakers control over the amount of light allowed into a child's room during waking and sleeping hours. Furthermore, the designs have been selected with diverse preferences in mind, offering options for those who enjoy bold colour as well as those who prefer more subtle decorating choices. Finally, with their favourite characters watching over them, children are generally more inclined to want to spend time in their rooms – whether Dusty Crophopper or Minnie Mouse are inspiring their playtime or gently lulling them to sleep.

In selecting characters to feature in the new collection, the two companies were careful to ensure that the images not only inspired imaginations, but also embodied positive qualities such as friendliness, curiosity and compassion in order to positively impact children's creativity during both play and sleep. Dan Dossa, Deputy Head of Retail, The Walt Disney Company Nordic, comments:

"The Disney & VELUX Dream Collection features some of our most beloved characters – characters that help create an atmosphere of discovery and wonder. They have been chosen because they all capture the hearts of audiences both young and old, and have the power to bring whole families together. This is what the Disney & VELUX Dream Collection is all about."

The Disney & VELUX Dream Collection
The emphasis on exceptional quality has been fundamental throughout the VELUX Group and Disney's collaboration. Kent Holm, explains:

"From the very onset of this project, the VELUX Group and Disney were very clear about what we were striving for. We wanted to develop the highest quality blinds possible, and at the same time create a universe that connected with people and in particular with children. When the collaboration with Disney became an option, we quickly realised that we could combine the best of both our brands to develop an ideal solution for families. With our technical knowledge of high quality blinds production and Disney's spectacular universe, we feel that this project is indeed a great match, in terms of both reaching a new audience and creating a fantastic universe for children to enjoy. We believe this to be the answer our customers have been waiting for."

VELUX blinds are produced to meet the highest industry standards, in terms of not only quality but also when it comes to health and safety. All new designs live up to stringent OEKO-TEX® standards, ensuring that the components used for blinds contain no harmful substances or chemical products that can harm the body. With children in particular, it is essential to ensure that no dangerous elements enter their living space.

The Disney & VELUX Dream Collection comprises six Disney characters – Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Planes and Disney Princess – each represented by two distinct design options: one that is bright and vivid and the other offering a more subtle experience. The 100% blackout blinds ensure excellent control over the amount of light allowed into children's rooms during playtime and sleep time. Each blind is tailored specifically to the size and shape of the window.

All Disney & VELUX Dream Collection blinds feature VELUX Pick&Click!™ technology, allowing for easy installation. Switching out the blinds for new Disney-themed or other VELUX blinds is equally straightforward.

Blinds,Design,Roof windows

A climate renovation is a unique concept in which health and well-being combine with high energy efficiency. After experimenting with several demonstration buildings across Europe, the roof window producer will now renovate a house in the garden city of Bon Air in Anderlecht.

</pp:summary>

The uniqueness of the VELUX climate renovation project lies in its reproducibility in both financial and technical terms. Indeed, the current challenge is no longer how to build or renovate low energy buildings, but how to do so at a reasonable cost. The experiment aims to define an affordable solution that can be scaled for use all over Europe. The selected building typology was chosen after an analysis of the real estate market potential, with the hope that a widespread implementation of this concept will lead to large-scale energy savings.

A reproducible, comfortable and affordable renovation solution
To test its concept in practice, the VELUX Group entered into a strategic partnership with the social housing company Foyer Anderlechtois/Anderlechtse Haard, which owns around 3,600 social dwellings in the Brussels area. A compact, semi-detached house in very bad condition, dating back to the mid-1920s, was made available for renovation. An architecture competition was organised to generate new ideas and innovative concepts for the climate renovation. The Antwerp-based architecture office ONO Architectuur has won it and will develop the project.

"We at the VELUX Group want to engage in and contribute to the debate on sustainable living in buildings. We are investing time and resources in this project because we think that health and well-being deserve more attention, especially in energy-efficient buildings. Moreover, I find this project very relevant from a social point of view; sustainable and healthier buildings have to be made accessible to the many," says Christian Fosseur, General Manager of VELUX Belgium.

The VELUX climate renovation project addresses a series of current challenges. First, it focuses on renovation − 90% of today's buildings will still be in use in 2050. New buildings represent only a tiny proportion of the European building stock, and most of the buildings we live in were designed with little attention for a healthy indoor climate and energy efficiency. Indeed, buildings account for 40% of the overall energy consumption, and 30% of the buildings we live and work in do not offer a healthy indoor climate. As a result, the European building stock is in urgent need of renovation.

For the VELUX Group, the solution lies in 'climate renovations', renovations that combine health and well-being with energy savings.

"Daylight and natural ventilation, at the core of VELUX expertise, play a crucial role in climate renovations," underlines Christian Fosseur.

Active House − a vision of buildings that give more than they take
The technical specifications used for this project will be the ones defined by the Active House Alliance. The VELUX Group supports this NGO that unites producers of building materials, scientists and architects around a vision of buildings that "give more than they take". The Active House vision focuses not only on energy efficiency but also on indoor climate and impact on the environment. It strives for a holistic view on buildings.

The building works are planned to start in late 2014. After the summer of 2015, the Group will open the house to visitors for twelve months in order to share the concept with a wider audience. Afterwards, it will be occupied by a social housing beneficiary, with further scientific monitoring for two more years. The VELUX Group will communicate the results of and experience learned from this project, and thus contribute to the debate about the buildings of the future.

VELUX − a tradition of experimenting
Villum Kann Rasmussen, the Danish founder of the VELUX Group once said: "One experiment is better than a thousand expert views". This statement underlines the VELUX tradition of building and renovating exemplary buildings, challenging the way VELUX products perform and setting new standards for innovation.

Since 2007, the VELUX Group has been building demonstration houses in Europe as part of the 'Model Home 2020' project, setting a benchmark for the design of sustainable homes and searching for solutions to the issues of climate, occupation and building typology. The provision of abundant daylight and excellent indoor air quality turned each of the projects into desirable homes with a high standard of living. Each building has been occupied for at least one year, with a scientific programme monitoring energy and well-being parameters to ensure sound results.

Today, the Group continues to design new exemplary projects in various climatic and cultural settings.

Sidebar: The winner project
ONO Architectuur developed a subtle proposal to give the semi-detached house a facelift and to create an impulse to improve the general living quality of the surrounding area, the Bon Air garden city. The proposal was selected because of its rational use of space, its cost effectiveness and its effective but simple technical approach that can easily be reproduced.

"For us, it was a real challenge to recreate the characteristics of a garden city while living up to the very high ambitions of the Active House Standards," states Jonas Lindekens, managing partner at ONO Architectuur.

Inside the house of about 100 square metres, a healthy and comfortable indoor climate is at the heart of the concept. The layout provides an abundance of daylight. The stairs have been moved to the centre of the house, creating a circulation core that doubles as ventilation and daylight shaft. The project adds to the building's daylight, fresh air and space, as well as giving a view to the garden.

The winning project was selected by a jury composed of Sylvie Reuter (Deputy Director of Foyer Anderlechtois), Grégoire Clerfayt (Director of the energy department of IBGE-BIM) and Georges Brutsaert (ARIB - Architecture in Brussels) and two VELUX representatives: Christian Fosseur (General Manager VELUX Belgium) and Lone Feifer (Sustainable Living Director, VELUX A/S).

VELUX,Renovation,Roof windows

The VELUX Group is in the race to win a sustainability award for the second consecutive year, this time as strategic partner in the project Green Solution House, now nominated among hundreds of projects worldwide as a nominee for the Sustainia Award. It pushes back the boundaries in the fields of climate renovation and sustainability in new build.

Green Solution House has been selected as part of Sustainia100, a new sustainability guide launched in London on 9 June 2013, for its positive social, economic and environmental impact on local communities. Represented in 128 countries, Sustainia100 presents the 100 most innovative and impactful solutions out of 500+ nominated projects and technologies.

An entirely new combination of multiple sustainable building practices makes the Green Solution House a unique demonstration case and the first of its kind. The knowledge and conference centre, located on the bright green island of Bornholm, represents a new build and climate renovation in one single facility and builds on Active House principles, is inspired by Cradle to Cradle and is to be certified according to the sustainability standard DGNB.

Christopher Sveen, Director of Business Development, Sustainia:
"With its holistic design approach to energy, water management, biodiversity, indoor air quality and materials Green Solution House helps push back the boundaries for what a green building can be."
Green Solution House is designed with a light-optimising modular climate envelope producing clean energy and improving the indoor climate with daylight and fresh air. Specific parts of the building are designed for disassembly and continuous improvement and thereby fully reflect Green Solution House' core philosophy of fostering green innovations.

The VELUX Group is a strategic partner of Green Solution House because it showcases how Active House principles can be applied in new and existing buildings with high standards for daylight, air quality and energy efficiency whilst minimising the environmental impact. The Active House Alliance, co-founded by the VELUX Group, aims for a vision of buildings that create healthier and more comfortable lives for their occupants without impacting negatively on the climate. An Active House is evaluated on the basis of the interaction between energy consumption, indoor climate conditions and impact on the environment.

Lone Feifer, Programme Director, VELUX Group:
"The nomination is a great recognition for the project as a driver for sustainable development. We in the VELUX Group join in with the ambition to lead the development of better living conditions with daylight and fresh air through the roof. We are committed to supplying products and solutions with minimal environmental impact that optimise health and well-being. And we see these goals united in the project Green Solution House."

Best solution – Sustainia Award
Green Solution House also enters the contest for the international sustainability award, Sustainia Award, chaired by former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mr. Schwarzenegger heads the selection jury that also includes former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, EU Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard, and Chair of the UN Climate Panel, IPCC, Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri.

What is more, the effect is shown to be significant throughout every European climate from the cold north to the sunny south and the distant east.

</pp:summary>

Daylight is known to influence our experience of space, our mood and feeling of comfort. However, large amounts of daylight in buildings may bring more benefits than making our homes look attractive and lighting up our mood. This has been brought to light in a new study by researchers from Loughborough University, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and the VELUX Group.

The Daylighting, Artificial Lighting and Non-Visual Effects Study for Residential Buildings investigates the after-effects of a real-life renovation where eight new roof windows were installed in a typical four-person family house. It came as no surprise that the research showed that the level of daylight exposure was much greater and the need for artificial lighting was reduced − the real novelty of the study appeared in the evaluation of non-visual effects on human beings of the improved distribution of daylight in the rooms.

"The daily dose of light exposure for the average European is generally considered to be too low, which has a negative effect on our sleep quality and well-being. In our research building, the installation of windows increased the likelihood of positive non-visual effects by up to 55 %, which is a major and notable improvement," says Per Arnold Andersen, Head of the VELUX Knowledge Centre for daylight, energy and indoor climate.

Insomnia is believed to affect about a third of the general population. One way to improve the sleep-wake cycle of the human body is to ensure large amounts amount of daylight ex-posure in the morning and daytime, and to sleep in total darkness at night.

Impressive effects in every climate
The family house that was renovated is physically located in Denmark, but an advanced simulation framework made it possible for the researchers to evaluate results for seven ad-ditional European countries: Germany, Sweden, Poland, Italy, the UK, Russia and Spain. The research showed that, in spite of the different climate conditions, the likelihood for non-visual effects on humans after adding roof windows seemed to be significantly increased in all these countries.

"In our research, the addition of roof windows in all cases brought significantly more daylight to the eye and so increased the potential for the non-visual effects of light on the building occupants" says Professor John Mardaljevic. Apart from the non-visual effects on humans the increased daylight is also estimated to re-duce the need for artificial lighting by 16-20%, depending on the location and orientation of the house.

About the study

The study is based on a model derived by Professor Marilyne Andersen of EPFL in Switzerland. The model relies on photobiology literature to extract threshold light exposures at the eye for various moments of the day and, from there, an indication of how likely a given light exposure is to achieve non-visual effects such as alertness increase or circadian entrainment.

The simulation framework used in the study is developed by Professor John Mardaljevic of the School of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough University in UK.

The study is part of an ongoing program of research by Professor Marilyne Andersen at EPFL (to integrate dynamic aspects related to timing, history and spectrum of light exposure) and Professor John Mardaljevic at Loughborough (to extend the simulation capabilities) with the goal of providing a basis for the evaluation of the non-visual effects of daylight that could one day be incorporated in building standards and design guidelines.

Roof windows,Daylight,Indoor climate

Central to the visit was the question of the sustainable society of the future, an increasingly important issue in both Finland and Denmark.

</pp:summary>

The CEO of the VELUX Group, Jørgen Tang-Jensen, welcomed the distinguished guests, President Sauli Niinistö and Minister of foreign affairs Erkki Tuomija, to the Group's head office in Hørsholm. Accompanying them was a large entourage. All were invited inside the energy-efficient, carbon-neutral home Soltag, built by the VELUX Group to demonstrate that it is possible to build homes that have low energy consumption and a healthy indoor climate at the same time.

"Climate change is a global issue that all nations must handle and be aware of. So it was very gratifying to see the president show so much interest, not only in our products, but also in our thoughts about sustainable living in buildings," says Jørgen Tang-Jensen.

For many years, the VELUX Group has worked intensively to promote sustainability and energy efficiency in European buildings – out of respect for the climate of the planet and to improve the indoor climate of buildings. These issues are assuming growing importance in both Finland and Denmark, as well as the rest of Europe.

Bringing daylight in to Finnish buildings

Behind the President's decision to visit the VELUX Group is the fact that the Danish roof window manufacturer has had its own sales company in Finland since 1980. Historically, the cold Finnish weather has presented challenges for Finns who would like a window in their roof. However, years of improving and refining building components for homes has now made it more accessible for the people of Finland to get daylight and fresh air through the roof.

"The Finnish market is far from one of our biggest. However, Finland is one of the world's leading nations when it comes to green technology. It is a nation that is actively working towards improving its building stock by ensuring both a healthy indoor climate and low energy consumption in homes. This is something our roof windows can help the Finns achieve," explains General Manager of VELUX Finland, Kristine Belska.

Denmark and Finland share a common focus on green technology, energy efficiency and sustainable buildings.

VELUX,Sustainable buildings,Roof windows,Events Awards & Sponsorships

Are your windows dressed for the winter cold?

<pp:caseid>39505</pp:caseid>

Most of us have dug out our winter coats and mittens to keep us warm in the cold months to come. But not many of us spare a thought for the fact that we can save energy by cladding our windows for the cold season in winter clothes.

It is a perfectly natural reflex: when we have to go out into the cold, we put on a warm coat to keep warm. If we are cold indoors, we probably put on an extra jersey but maybe we also turn the heating up a bit. On a bitter evening, when the cold is biting outside, our homes can seem a little chilly and it is tempting to reach for the thermostat.

But we actually keep the warmth in better on cold days and evenings by rolling the blinds down. This applies to roof windows in particular – special energy blinds keep the warmth in the room thanks to built-in insulation material.

"It's a really good idea to fit energy blinds on roof windows – because the aluminium be-tween the two layers of pleated materials boosts the insulation. The warm air in a room rises, and if you roll the blinds right down, they help to maintain temperatures, so the room will be more comfortable to spend time in when it's cold outside," says Ghita Borring, Head of VELUX Media Relations.

When rolled completely down, an energy blind provides up to 34% extra insulation on each roof window.

Multi-functional energy blinds

But there is more to an energy blind than saving energy – it also has a good blackout effect and looks good, thanks to the structure of the folds. What is more, it is adjustable – as it is not fixed at top or bottom, it can be moved up and down the window to any position, block-ing out the sun and prying eyes and yet letting in the light.

"When you have an adjustable blind like the energy blind, you can sit and read your news-paper by the window and enjoy the light without being blinded by the sun. You can position the blind to offer screening just where the sun is strongest," says Ghita Borring, Head of VELUX Media Relations.

So, now it is time to prepare for the winter.
The VELUX Group has launched its energy blind in nine different colours. It is a double-pleated blind with an internal coating of aluminium between the layers of material and fitted with a cloth that gives an effective blackout effect. The blind is versatile and can be posi-tioned precisely on the roof window where you want it and can be rolled up and down. The energy blind is easy to click onto the roof window with the patented Pick&Click!® system. It can also be combined with a VELUX insect blind, awning or roller shutter.
We roast and we baste, we pickle and we bake. December is a busy month in the kitchen, with Christmas dinner and lunches to prepare. The cooking smells and fumes are difficult to get rid of and can hang around for days. Here are five useful tips for good ventilation and fresh air in the festive season.

Whilst you're cooking:
1. Make sure the filter in the cooking hood is clean. If it is clogged with fat, the hood cannot suck air through it efficiently and it will be little more than useless. And re-member to switch it on when you are cooking.
2. Close the doors in your home whilst the feast is being prepared to keep as much of the smells and fumes as possible in the kitchen.
3. Open the kitchen window closest to the hood at the same time as switching on the hood. This allows fresh air to enter the room and carry the steam and fumes out through the cooker hood.

When you've finished cooking:
4. Open all the kitchen windows for 15 minutes. This allows stale air to be replaced with fresh without turning the kitchen into a refrigerator. The fresh air will also help lower humidity levels, which always rise when you're cooking. You should do this three times in the course of the day.
5. If you have a roof window in or close to the kitchen, the so-called chimney effect will give you the best airing out: open the vertical windows in the kitchen and the roof window at the same time. As hot air rises, you will quickly flood your home with fresh air and get rid of the cooking smells through the roof.
The new generation of remote-controlled roof windows from the VELUX Group has been awarded the Design Award at Ingeniørens Produktpris 2012. One of the reasons for the Danish trade magazine's selection was that VELUX INTEGRA® roof window allows greater daylight influx and makes a positive contribution to a home's energy bill.

VELUX INTEGRA® consists of an electrically-powered roof window and a control unit to operate it and the associated sunscreening equipment. The control unit's memory contains pre-installed weather data that enaVELUX INTEGRA® consists of an electrically-powered roof window and a control unit to opbles automatic operation of the window depending on prevailing weather conditions and thereby optimises a home's energy consumption and indoor climate. In practical terms, that means the control unit allows the user to automatically optimise heat intake and insulation properties in the heating season and minimise heat intake and prevent overheating in the summer.

In the development phase, attention was paid to combining design, technology and user-friendliness, a feature that found favour in the statement made by the jury in explaining their decision:

"VELUX INTEGRA® has won the design award because it is a well-considered and contem-porary update of the familiar VELUX product, GGL roof window. […] The window has been given intelligence, with an in-built rain sensor and a number of climate-optimising features that make the window more than a means of admitting light – it has become an active component in controlling the home's energy bill and provides the residents with automatic and controlled air circulation."

The recognition has been met with delight at VELUX Danmark A/S:

"We began the year by introducing our new generation of roof windows, and now end it by receiving a prestigious award for its intelligent design. That is a real pat on the back for everyone involved. The award also sends out an important signal that even with such well-known products as our roof windows, development and improvement is a continual process," says Jesper Salskov Jensen, General Manager of VELUX Danmark A/S. He continues:

"It is especially pleasing that the panel of judges spoke highly of the contribution VELUX INTEGRA® makes to a home's energy bill and improvement of the indoor climate – and of the natural ventilation that has been the cornerstone of our development of the new gen-eration of roof windows."

VELUX INTEGRA® was designed at the development departments in Østbirk near Horsens (in Jutland) and Group headquarters in Hørsholm, north of Copenhagen. The new generation of remote-controlled roof windows arrived on the market in Scandinavia in the spring of 2012 and will be introduced to the rest of Europe in the next few years.
The prestigious Mobile of the Day is awarded exclusively to innovations that manage to combine the latest technology with creative and ground-breaking ideas. And that was exactly the idea behind the acclaimed app VELUX Installer.

The app was developed for the VELUX Group's numerous installers around the world, whose job it is daily to inspire customers to choose VELUX roof windows. The app allows the in-stallers to visualise the variety of window systems they can install for the customer and, with the help of videos and photos, show the difference windows could make to a room.

VELUX Installer also contains digital versions of every VELUX Group product catalogue, so the installers no longer have to carry around a brief case full of paper when they are on their rounds of customers.

The international acclaim was met with delight in the VELUX Group.

"We wanted to create a flexible and creative tool that would make things easier for installers all over the world, whether they are selling windows in Germany, Italy or Chile. A lot of time and effort has gone into it, so we are delighted to receive international recognition from FWA," enthuses Michael K. Rasmussen, VELUX Group Marketing Director.

So far the VELUX Installer app – which was developed by the digital agency Creuna - is available through Apple's iTunes Store in Germany, Holland and Italy. The VELUX Group will gradually make it available for other countries in the future.
During the first Slovakian state visit to Denmark, the Presidential couple visited the VELUX Group, the only company visit made in their two-day stay. Central to the visit was the question of the sustainable society of the future, an increasingly important issue in both Slovakia and the other EU States.

The CEO of the VELUX Group, Jørgen Tang-Jensen, welcomed the distinguished guests, President Ivan Gašparovi? and his wife Silvia Beníková, to the Group's head office in Hørsholm. Accompanying them was a large entourage. All were invited inside an energy-efficient, carbon-neutral home with a good indoor climate.

"Climate change is no respecter of national borders, and the efforts to combat it are the responsibility of every nation. So it was gratifying and inspiring to see the President show so much interest in our thoughts and solutions," says Jørgen Tang-Jensen.

For many years, the VELUX Group has worked intensively to promote sustainability and en-ergy-efficiency in European building – out of respect for the climate of the planet and to improve the indoor climate of buildings. These issues are assuming growing importance, also in Slovakia – not only in terms of the climate challenges of the future but also because of the current real challenge of the financial crisis in the EU, which has so far been lenient to Slovakia.

Ultra-modern factory in Slovakia
Behind the President's decision to visit the VELUX Group is the fact that the Danish roof window manufacturer has had its own sales company in Slovakia since 1990. This involve-ment was expanded with a factory in 2009, with the result that the Group now employs some 300 people in the country.

"When we established our sales company in Slovakia 22 years ago, very few would have imagined that, today, it would be home to our most modern and sustainable factory. Yet it is – and one of the most important reasons is the great local interest in learning new things and promoting trade and commerce in Slovakia. And that interest was clearly shown by the President and his wife during their visit," comments Jørgen Tang-Jensen.

The VELUX Group has invested Euro 40 millions in the factory in Slovakia, which was built in less than a year. It now supplies the VELUX Group's other markets with the most sophisticated and modern products.

Roof windows,Indoor climate

But simple things can be done to give things a nudge in the right direction. An experiment conducted by the VELUX Group shows that new roof and facade windows can make all the difference and raise the sales price by thousands of Euros.

</pp:summary>

Apart from obvious steps such as cleaning, painting and minor repairs, replacing windows can be a profitable affair for home owners.

"Windows are the eyes of a house and their condition is one of the things a potential buyer looks closely at. New windows make a greater visual impression and daylight makes it easier to sell a home. New windows often mean lower heating bills and are also an important factor in giving a house a better energy certification," explains Mads Ellegaard, Head of Public Affairs for the Danish chain of estate agents, home.

"A home owner can often improve domestic finances and enjoyment of the home by replacing its windows. It also puts the seller in a much stronger position when the time comes to sell the house – it will sell faster or fetch a better price," says home.

New windows can raise the value of a home by 46.000 Euros
A single-family house placed in Copenhagen, Denmark provides a classic example of the effect of installing new windows in the roof. In an experiment by the VELUX Group, the house's basement and first floor were converted with the focus sharply on bringing more light into the home and harnessing the energy of the sun to improve heating bills.

"12 new roof windows have been installed that have made a dramatic improvement to the influx of light from above and given enormous potential for natural ventilation. At the same time, solar panels - that meets the house's requirements for domestic hot water and reduce its energy consumption were installed in connection with the roof windows," explains Henrik Norlander Smith, an architect in the VELUX Group.

"The combination of increased value and improved economics has raised the estimated sales price of the house by 46.000 Euros, which means that the increased value of the house is least as big as the investment made. And in addition to that the house might very well be easier to sell at a good price", says Jes Frydendall, owner of home Hellerup, the estate agency who evaluated the house.

The total market price of the renovation is about 46.000 Euros. In addition to the increased value, the house's heating needs fall by 2,595 kWh – that is about 650 Euros – a year.

Hundreds of thousands of houses need window renovation
The VELUX Group states that hundreds of thousands of home owners would benefit from replacing the windows in their homes.

"We know there are hundreds of thousands of homes in Europe with old and worn-out windows that reduce the value of the home, the indoor climate and the sales potential. This affects the residents' well-being and their finances," explains Henrik Norlander Smith of the VELUX Group.

People wishing to renovate and install new windows can in some cases and countries apply to their energy companies for grants and guidance. They can also make use of various subsidies for home improvement.
The VELUX Group is capable of bringing daylight into dark rooms where it's not possible to have facade windows or roof windows. The solution is a Sun Tunnel that brings about 98% of the daylight into for example a bathroom, a corridor or a walk-in closet. This film tells the story of a family whose life changed as a direct consequence to the large amount of daylight that they now have in the long corridor after having Sun Tunnels installed. The family father tells about the fact that the children feel better and now like to play in the corridor. The architect from VELUX Danmark tells about the advantages of having Sun Tunnels in dark rooms, and the European Product Manager of Sun Tunnels guides us through the installation of the Sun Tunnel and tells us about his fascination of seeing how much daylight a Sun Tunnel can bring into a room. </pp:summary>

"We have been working intensively during the past years to develop the new generation of VELUX roof windows. It sets new standards to the benefit of millions of people who enjoy daylight and fresh air though the roof from VELUX windows. The new generation combines outstanding insulation properties with significantly improved benefits from passive solar gain and thereby reaches excellent energy efficiency levels," says Group CEO Jørgen Tang-Jensen of VELUX A/S. He adds, "In this way, VELUX roof windows will be a net contributor to low-energy housing, which is so important to reducing global energy consumption, of which buildings account for about 40 percent".

Improved energy efficiency and better indoor climate
Throughout the development process, the quest was to find the right construction principles to ensure optimised energy efficiency while enhancing the high quality and proven construction principles that have always been a hallmark of VELUX roof windows. With the introduction of VELUX Thermo Technology, the new VELUX generation has improved insulation properties with a u-value down to 1,2 for standard roof windows. Combined with a larger pane area, which not only admits up to 18 percent more daylight but also more passive solar heat gain into our homes, the new roof windows raise optimised energy balance and energy efficiency to new and excellent levels.

"The pane area has been increased for two reasons. First, we wanted to improve the energy efficiency of the new roof window, which is not only better insulated but also benefits from more passive solar gain in cold periods – the net result being outstanding energy balance and energy performance. Second, more daylight reduces the need for electrical light, which both saves energy and improves the well-being of people who live and work in buildings," explains Jørgen Tang-Jensen.

In addition to improving its products' passive solar gains in the heating season, VELUX will continue to offer a range of unique pane variants and decoration and sun protection systems to limit overheating in warmer periods and climate zones.

Fresh air is equally important for a good indoor climate and with the new generation of VELUX roof windows, ventilation is still possible even when the window is closed thanks to the unique ventilation flap, which has long been a well-known VELUX hallmark. This ensures a unique supply and control of fresh air, which means a better indoor climate.

Several new and improved features and benefits
In addition to setting new standards in energy efficiency, VELUX has developed a range of new and improved features in the new generation – to the benefit of millions of people living in buildings as well as the many dealers, installers and architects who work with VELUX products every day.

"We are pleased to announce that the new generation of VELUX roof windows also offers a range of new and improved benefits in design, comfort, and installation principles that will be welcomed by our many customers, installers, dealers and architects around the world," says Group Chief Commercial Officer Jacob Schambye of VELUX A/S.

The new VELUX roof windows can be installed faster and at two different levels in the roof – standard or flush – thanks to the new multi-level installation bracket. With a flush installation, the window lies 40 mm deeper in the roof, which gives a more aesthetic appearance and contributes further to energy savings.

The new VELUX INTEGRA® control pad has been completely re-designed and provides an advanced, yet simple and user-friendly, indoor climate control for electrical VELUX roof windows and accessories. The design of the new generation of VELUX roof windows has also been improved, both internally and externally with slimmer sashes and frames, which makes for a more elegant window.

New generation – renowned quality and solutions for all needs
All products from the VELUX Group have been subjected to exhaustive testing to ensure that they meet the high and stringent VELUX requirements for quality and performance. The test programme covers such factors as energy performance, ventilation, noise reduction, safety, durability and operation.

With the new generation, VELUX will continue its long tradition of providing roof windows in many different types, sizes, variants and installation products to ensure that VELUX roof windows remain the preferred choice for daylight and fresh air through the roof in different buildings, roof types, and climate zones.

Launch period
The VELUX Group will unveil the new generation on 31 January at the Dach & Holz exhibition in Germany, where it will be offered in a limited edition in 2012. The new generation of VELUX roof windows will be launched in Scandinavia in the spring of 2012, with other markets following from 2013 and onwards. For more details about the launch of the new generation of VELUX roof window, please contact your national VELUX sales company.

Facts
The new generation of VELUX roof windows provides several new and improved benefits:
• Improved insulation performance with VELUX Thermo Technology and with a u-value down to 1,2 for standard roof windows
• Up to 18 percent more daylight
• Better energy balance
• New standard in operation and control with the INTEGRA® control pad with several programs
• World-class interior and exterior design with slimmer sashes and frames
• Improved packaging
• Easier and faster installation and handling

Energy Balance
Energy balance is a specific value consisting of a number of variables for each roof window and pane variant. Energy balance is a method of evaluating the energy efficiency of a window. It is the balance between the solar energy that enters through the window and the heat loss that escapes through the window. If the level of solar gain is higher than the heat loss, the energy balance of the window is positive.

Summer season
During the cooling season, energy balance should be as close to zero as possible, reducing the risk of overheating and avoiding the use of fossil energy for cooling. Roof windows with higher sun screening will continue to prevent overheating in the summer; additional heat protection can be provided by decoration and sun protection products and roller shutters.

Winter season
In the heating season, the energy balance should be greater than zero and as high as possible to reduce energy loss and optimise gains from passive solar energy. The new generation of VELUX roof windows provides both improved insulation performance with the integration of a newly-developed high-insulation material - VELUX Thermo Technology – and improves passive solar gain through a larger pane area that admits up to 18 per cent more daylight

VELUX,Roof windows,Indoor climate

Viessmann, one of the leading international manufacturers of heating systems, has entered a partnership agreement with the VELUX Group, market leader in roof windows and other building components for the roof. VELUX solar collectors will now be paired with Viessmann DHW cylinders and control units.

"The new partnership broadens our comprehensive product range for all fuel types and areas of application. In addition to our existing flat-plate and vacuum tube collectors, we can also offer VELUX in-roof collectors with their aesthetic integration into the roof. We believe that this will strengthen sales in both companies," says Dr Thomas Schweisfurth, Chief Sales Officer at Viessmann.

"The VELUX Group's strength is on the roof, not in the utility room. If we are to meet our customers' demand for a wide range of high-quality DHW cylinders, costs will be disproportionately high. In order to be able to maintain our ability to offer the customer the best solution in solar thermal systems, we have chosen to form a partnership with a leading international manufacturer. We strongly believe that the best solution, aesthetical as well as functional, consists of VELUX in-roof solar collectors paired with Viessmann DHW cylinders and control units," says Jacob Schambye, Market Director of the VELUX Group.

The partnership agreement enables the VELUX Group to sell its in-roof solar thermal collectors and accessories through Viessmann's distribution channels. Viessmann DHW cylinders, control units and components will continue to be supplied and supported by Viessmann through its well-established sales network.

The agreement covers Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. As a result of the new partnership, the VELUX Group will no longer sell DHW cylinders in these markets.

The partnership formally takes effect on 1 January 2012. Practical implementation is expected to be finished during the first half of 2012.
Today, the VELUX Group has issued a product warning to inform customers in 19 European countries about a minor risk of glass breakage in a specific type of small panes produced and sold between 1997 and 2003.
The panes in question are 8 to 14 years old and in the smallest width up to 39 cm. Under certain conditions, especially in winter, there is a minor risk that the inner glass may break, with the possibility of glass fragments falling.
" Even though the risk is marginal, we take the quality of our products seriously and we have therefore decided to issue a product warning to inform our customers," says VELUX Group CMO Michael Rasmussen.
The VELUX Group has established local websites to help customers determine whether they have one of the panes in question. Customers are – ex gratia - offered a new pane and a voucher to help cover installation costs.
"We recommend that our customers check whether they have one of the panes in question, and if so, visit the website for further information. We understand that people may be con-cerned, but we want to emphasise that the risk is marginal. We apologise for any inconven-ience and will do our utmost to support our customers in the best possible way," says Mi-chael Rasmussen.
Spontaneous glass breakage due to implosion may occur if a number of factors arise at the same time, e.g. rapid changes in temperature, moisture, air pressure in the pane, size and design of the insulating pane and the general condition of the window. During the last two very hard winters we saw an increase in spontaneous glass breakage. A thorough review of the incidents documents that they only involve small panes of a specific type produced be-tween 1997 and 2003.
The product warning has been issued in the following European countries: Belgium, Luxem-bourg, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Hun-gary, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Slovakia and Slovenia.
For further information and instructions customers are asked to visit their local VELUX web-site.
</pp:summary>

The partnership is a new design approach by the VELUX Group to work together with internationally acknowledged designers.

Karim Rashid is a leading figure in the field of modern design and considered by some to be a cultural provocateur. His perspective and clients are global and his projects range from products, interior design and fashion to furniture, lighting design and art. His designs are 'democratic' in the sense that they are accessible and affordable by everyone.

As a designer, Karim Rashid is always looking for ways to maximise light in his interior designs.

"Daylight is essential for our well-being and ability to think positively - and VELUX makes exceptional quality roof windows, flooding spaces with daylight. However, to create an intimate and recreational space, light control is an absolute must – for sleeping, working or privacy. So when VELUX asked me to design a blackout collection, I was excited to get to work with light versus darkness. Blackout blinds are the key to maintaining a satisfying sleep cycle and ideal for bedrooms and other spaces where complete light control is a must," says Karim Rashid.

A small piece of art
The VELUX blinds collection by Karim Rashid includes four unique patterns, each in two different colours. Depending on individual preferences, customers can choose from vibrant pink and acid yellow or more subtle designs of black and white. Inspiration from digital technology on the one hand and floral motifs on the other, adds a modern yet poetic look to the collection. The new patterns complement contemporary homes and have a sense of bringing an abstracted 'digital nature' into the home. Moreover four of the designs have beautiful and decorative metallic details creating a vivid texture."I want people to see a blind not as a genuine standard product but as a small piece of decorated art that adds beauty and even determines the style of the interior decoration," explains Karim Rashid.

Total darkness for day and night
The VELUX Blinds Collection by Karim Rashid lets you take full control of light and provides the best total blackout for both day and night. Perfect for afternoon naps and those lighter summer nights, blackout blinds are ideal for installing in bedrooms - the tight-fitting blinds prevent any light from entering the room. The new design collection fits any VELUX roof window perfectly without any adjustment and installs in minutes with the unique VELUX Pick&Clicktm system.

Great design for everyday living
Teaming up with one of the design world's most prolific designers demonstrates a new design approach in the VELUX Group.

"Choosing to work with Karim Rashid came from the recognition that if you want to be innovative, you have to experiment and demonstrate courage in the design process. So working together with internationally acknowledged designers like the 'King of Colors' represents a new experience at the VELUX Group. Usually our products serve the purpose of being discrete, but the new designs by Karim Rashid attract attention and add another feature besides quality and value for money to our products. We have already worked with one of the most respected proponents of Green Design, Ross Lovegrove, who designed the VELUX Suntunnel by Lovegrove that was launched earlier this year," says Kent Holm, Global Director of Accessories at the VELUX Group.

A year has passed since Green Lighthouse opened its doors for the first time.

The CO2-neutral building has been visited by more than 2,000 groups from near and far, including several heads of state, and has received eight national and international nominations and awards of recognition.

The students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Copenhagen University have shared the CO2-neutral building Green Lighthouse with many others than teaching staff, administrative personnel and other students in its first year of operation.

The building, literally a green beacon for CO2-neutral building and efficient public-private cooperation, has been visited by more than 2,000 groups and organisations from all over the world in the first year of its life. Even before the official opening day, Andris Piebalgs, EU Commissioner for Energy, dropped in. Since that day, other prominent visitors have included the Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg when he was here for COP15, China's Minister of Trade, Chen Deming, who was given a guided tour of the building on his two-day visit to Denmark, and President Medvedev of Russia. The day after his visit, he declared that he intended to build a Green Lighthouse in Russia.

"We are delighted that there has been so much interest in Green Lighthouse around the world. Every visitor helps spread the word that it is possible to build CO2-neutral buildings with an excellent indoor climate – right here and now," says Lone Feifer, Strategic Project Manager at VELUX A/S.

Eight nominations and awards of recognition
Green Lighthouse has received eight national and international nominations and awards in its first year of use. It has also been included in two new books:

Sustainable Building 2000-2010

Round Architecture

Green Lighthouse was nominated for the Danish Lighting Award 2010, awarded in December, and received the prize for "Excellent and Beautiful Buildings" in October 2010.

"The prestigious recognitions are a pat on the back for everyone involved in building Green Lighthouse. And we are immensely proud of them," says Lone Feifer.

Today, Green Lighthouse houses a Faculty Lounge, meeting facilities and the Student Service function of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. This places great demands on its functionality as well as climate issues

The unique public-private partnership that transformed a plan into reality comprises the Danish University and Property Agency, VELUX Group, VELFAC A/S, the Municipality of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University.

The partners are still harvesting data and experience from the first year of the building's operation and expect it to be processed and analysed in the spring of 2011.

The eight nominations and awards for Green Lighthouse Award for "Innovative Cooperation" in November 2009 by the Confederation of Danish Industry. Green Lighthouse won the award for the unique fashion in which the partners worked together, resulting in a building that is CO2-neutral, healthy and comfortable.(http://bm.di.dk/Videnom/Marked/Pages/Innovationspris 2008.aspx

Nominated for Climate Cup 2010 award at World Climate Solutions. The jury's justification for the nomination was that Green Lighthouse demonstrates that it is possible to build CO2-neutral buildings without compromising on design, comfort and indoor climate. http://www.climatecup.dk/da/page/449-partnerskabsprisen-2010
But as a company focusing on creating better living environments with daylight and fresh air through the roof, it was a straightforward decision to team up with Ross Lovegrove. The VELUX Vision is to create sustainable living based on high energy efficiency, use of the sun as a renewable energy source and improving the indoor climate.

Lovegrove is renowned for his work with new materials and for employing the very latest technology. He is a also proponent of Green Design, otherwise termed environmentally conscious design. Previous products he developed for companies such as Louis Poulsen, Vitra, Peugeot, Apple Computers and Tag Heuer are known for their aesthetic appeal.

This is also the case with his newest product, VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove. In essence, it is a daylight lamp that uses the sun as a bulb. The new diffuser is an add-on product to VELUX sun tunnels, giving a beautiful light reflectance to the room while allowing the user to adjust the direction of the light.

“We chose to step out of our ordinary way of developing new products when we entered into a partnership with Ross Lovegrove as external designer on this assignment. We believe we have a strong fit and that Lovegrove complements our competencies. He has a high standing in the field of sustainable design and with our vision for creating sustainable living by using the sun and daylight, we have together created a new innovative way to bring daylight into people’s homes,” says director Klaus Lorentzen, the VELUX Group.

The VELUX Group first introduced sun tunnels in 2005 and has since then attained the position as European market leader in this field as well. VELUX sun tunnels are especially suitable for spaces where installation of roof windows is inappropriate or impossible and where electrical light would normally be the only other option. Sun tunnels funnel natural light indoors, to the benefit and well-being of the residents.

Since 2005, VELUX has sold thousands of sun tunnels in 40 countries. With the new VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove, the VELUX Group expects to strengthen its market position even further.

“Maximum daylight and ventilation are preconditions for ensuring optimal indoor comfort and minimal energy consumption consistent with the standards of the future. In the EU today, we spend 90% of our time indoors, which is contributing to rising health problems. A sun tunnel offers a solution to this challenge by bringing the outdoor daylight environment indoors,” says director Klaus Lorentzen, the VELUX Group.

Inspired by the concept of harnessing natural light and bringing its purity and uplifting qualities into the home, Ross Lovegrove has developed a design that he believes creates “a moment of enlightenment in the home” - a contemporary interface between the tunnel of light and the interior design of living spaces.

“When I was contacted by VELUX, I felt an immediate affinity with its products and way of thinking that I find human, technologically innovative and democratic,” says Ross Lovegrove.

“I believe the design to be very pure and sincere in its accessibility by a broad spectrum of society. The VELUX sun tunnel itself is a wonderful product with perpetual lifetime values and so my design simply seeks to enhance these properties in an elegant and universal way.”

VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove is already an award-winning product. Just recently, the product was awarded the special recognition of the “red dot design award – best of the best 2010” distinction for the highest design quality. With more than 4.250 entries this year from about 60 countries, the international “red dot design award” is the largest and most renowned design competition in the world. Furthermore, VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove was presented at the biggest international building exhibition, Batimat, in Paris in November 2009, where it won a design award. The award aims at providing recognition to companies who have launched products created in cooperation with designers.

Design,Architecture,Roof windows

</pp:summary>

The name of the award-winning daylight diffuser is "VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove". It represents yet another innovative way to bring daylight into buildings.

This is one of the few times, the VELUX Group has entered into a partnership with an external designer.

"We chose to step out of our ordinary way of developing new products when we entered into a partnership with Ross Lovegrove as external designer on this assignment. We believe we have a strong fit and that Lovegrove complements our competencies. He has a high standing in the field of sustainable design and with our vision for creating sustainable living by using the sun and daylight, we have together created a new innovative way to bring daylight into people's homes," says Klaus Lorentzen, VELUX Group Vice President Product Development.

Bringing the outdoor daylight indoors
The VELUX Group first introduced sun tunnels in 2005 and has since then attained the position as European market leader in this field as well. VELUX sun tunnels are especially suitable for spaces where installation of roof windows is inappropriate or impossible and where electrical light would normally be the only other option. Sun tunnels funnel natural light indoors, to the benefit and well-being of the residents.

Since 2005, the VELUX Group has sold thousands of sun tunnels in 40 countries. With the new VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove, the VELUX Group expects to strengthen its market position even further.

"Maximum daylight and ventilation are preconditions for ensuring optimal indoor comfort and minimal energy consumption consistent with the standards of the future. In the EU today, we spend 90% of our time indoors, which is contributing to rising health problems. A sun tunnel offers a solution to this challenge by bringing the outdoor daylight environment indoors," says Klaus Lorentzen, VELUX Group Vice President Product Development.

Inspired by the concept of harnessing natural light and bringing its purity and uplifting qualities into the home, Ross Lovegrove has developed a design that he believes creates "a moment of enlightenment in the home" - a contemporary interface between the tunnel of light and the interior design of living spaces.

"When I was contacted by VELUX, I felt an immediate affinity with its products and way of thinking that I find human, technologically innovative and democratic," says Ross Lovegrove.

Already an award winning product
"I believe the design to be very pure and sincere in its accessibility by a broad spectrum of society. The VELUX sun tunnel itself is a wonderful product with perpetual lifetime values and so my design simply seeks to enhance these properties in an elegant and universal way."

VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove is already an award-winning product. Just recently, the product was awarded the special recognition of the "red dot design award – best of the best 2010" distinction for the highest design quality. With more than 4.250 entries this year from about 60 countries, the international "red dot design award" is the largest and most re-nowned design competition in the world. Furthermore, VELUX sun tunnel by Lovegrove was presented at the biggest international building exhibition, Batimat, in Paris in November 2009, where it won a design award. The award aims at providing recognition to companies who have launched products created in cooperation with designers.

Roof windows,Natural light,Design

The "red dot" is a sought-after quality label worldwide. This year 1,636 companies from 57 countries have taken part with a total of 4,252 entries for the international jury to evaluate. The winners will be celebrated at a glamorous award presentation in July.

Our sun tunnel prod-uct line is a natural extension of this and with the new award winning sun tunnel by Love-grove, we give our customers a whole new way of experiencing and controlling daylight. The accessory, which has been developed in a fruitful cooperation with Ross Lovegrove and his team, acts as a daylight lamp where the sun is the bulb. With this kind of wattage our customers can bring daylight into their homes in new ways allowing them to bring a little bit of the outside inside and to enjoy the world-class design of Ross Lovegrove at the same time," says corporate manager Jens Rasmussen, VELUX New Products.

</pp:summary>

More than 20.000 COP15 delegates will pass through the building every day when leaving the conference. The intention is to give all the conference delegates a first-hand impression of how sustainable architecture and components can play an important role in tackling the challenge of climate change.

The concept behind VELUX House is to devise new sustainable and energy-neutral pre-fabricated homes.

The house is designed to replace the former closed roof construction of multi-storey buildings and demonstrate how energy renovation of older apartment buildings can be achieved by utilising daylight and natural ventilation at the same time as minimising the use of resources – and thus CO2 emissions. While serving as the COP 15 entrance building, VELUX House is placed at ground floor level.

"We need fresh air and daylight - also when we are indoors. It has a positive effect on our health and well-being as well as our ability to learn. Everything in VELUX House has been built to catch the rays of the sun and maximise natural daylight flowing into the rooms from the roof windows and the front facade of full-height windows", says Michael K. Rasmussen, VELUX Group Director of Branding & Communication.

The roof of VELUX House offers large areas for solar panels and is therefore a source of energy. The active roof will generate so much energy that the surplus can either be fed into the grid or used by other residents in the same building. In short, the surfaces covering the house will be energy-generating surfaces, power plants in their own right.

Healthy buildings,Architecture,Renovation,Roof windows,Indoor climate

'Home for Life' is the first of six houses to be built in Europe as part of the Model Home 2020 concept, which aims to inspire future building. The objective is to create climate-neutral buildings with optimised indoor climate, fresh air and daylight. The total energy consumption is minimised and covered by renewable and CO2-neutral energy generated by the building itself. After around 30 years, the surplus energy is equivalent to the amount of energy represented by the materials the house is built from. Over the next year, a family of four will live in the house, which enables real-life energy monitoring. Available video includes an animation of the 'Home for Life' model.

Sustainable buildings,Architecture,Roof windows,Natural ventilation
