International VELUX Award 2012 opens for registration

On 1 October, The VELUX Group launches the International VELUX Award 2012 to encourage and challenge students of architecture all over the world to explore and investigate daylight in architecture under the award theme "Light of Tomorrow".

Students need to register before 1 March 2012 to be able to participate.

- Our ambition is to promote daylight, fresh air and quality of life. We present the International VELUX Award every second year to challenge students to propose ideas for future sustainable architecture, taking advantage of the students' curiosity and courage to explore social, psychological and environmental dimensions of sunlight and daylight, says Per Arnold Andersen, architect and head of Daylight, Energy and Indoor Climate Department in the VELUX Group.

The International VELUX Award 2012 encourages sustainable ideas and solutions considering not only new buildings but also the existing building stock in cities as well as in suburban residential areas. The Award is looking for proposals that combine a clear energy strategy with a specific focus on the health and well-being of people living and working in the buildings.

International jury
The jury for the 2012 Award has been assembled to reflect the global nature of the International VELUX Award. The jury members, Alvaro Siza from Portugal, Brigitte Shim from Canada, Peter Stutchbury from Australia, and Francis Kéré originally from Burkina Faso now living in Germany have all taught, published and built across borders and are all dedicated to sustainable architecture with concerns for local environments and climate conditions.

- We are pleased to present a distinguished panel of jury members with different cultural backgrounds, nationalities and approaches to architecture. This will strengthen the integrity of the award and hopefully encourage students to register for the 2012 Award and submit inspiring projects before the closing in May 2012, says Per Arnold Andersen.

In 2010 more than 2,300 students responded to the challenge and registered for the Award. The three winning projects found among 673 submitted projects came from South Korea, China and the Netherlands, whereas previous winners in 2008, 2006 and 2004 represented the US, Portugal, Denmark, Spain, United Kingdom, Norway and Croatia.

Students must register their intention to participate before 1 March 2012. More information and current updates can be found at the Award website: www.velux.com/iva. The Award is organized in cooperation with the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE).
